Four Common Warning Signs You May Need New Brake Lines

The brake lines of your car's hydraulic braking system generally don't need to be replaced until they fail. This means you should watch out for signs of worn or damaged brake lines to know when to get a replacement.

Brake line failure can manifest itself in many ways. Here are some of the common warning signs that could mean you need new brake lines.

1. Brake Fluid Leaks

Along with brake hoses, brake lines carry hydraulic fluid between brake components, allowing you to turn pedal pressure into braking power when you're driving. These metal tubes run the length of the car and they can get damaged because they're located underneath the vehicle.

If you spot a puddle of brake fluid underneath your car, your brake lines may likely be cracked or broken. Loss of brake fluid will result in loss of the hydraulic pressure that is needed to slow down and halt your vehicle safely.

2. Longer Braking Distances

When your car's brake fluid level drops below the minimum required level, your car will start to take longer than usual to stop. This may point to the possibility that your brake lines are leaking brake fluid.

Get your brake lines checked immediately if you're having problems with halting your car.

3. Spongy Brake

When your brakes are working properly, you should be able to slow down or stop your vehicle when you apply gentle pressure on the brake pedal. If the pedal goes all the way to the floor, you may have lost braking power and this can be a dangerous thing.

If there's a fluid loss in your brake lines, your brake system will lose the pressure required to allow safe and effective brake application.

4. Brake Warning Light Turns ON

When there's something wrong with your brakes, the brake warning light on your dash will come on to alert you to the problem. When your brake lines are failing, say due to brake fluid leaks, expect to see this light come on.

As a car owner, you have a responsibility to ensure your vehicle is safe to use. Driving an unsafe vehicle not only puts you and other road users in harm's way but it can also result in harsh penalties if you get caught by the police. Properly functioning brakes are essential to allow safe car-stopping. If you suspect your brake lines are failing, seek out a mechanic for brake repair service.
